Are you the product?

Data mining

As is said in marketing: “If the product is free, you are the product.” If you are disturbed by what’s being collected about you via Facebook, deleting Facebook apps is a good place to start (they are the games and quizzes you sign up to daily on Facebook). Go Facebook > Settings & Privacy > Account Settings > Apps and delete the apps you don’t want to have access to your information.

And remember Facebook isn’t all bad: it lets you share news and connect with your friends; gives charities a free platform for promotion; allows small businesses to target their products at people who might be interested in them.

Data mining is everywhere, and it isn’t a bad thing, so long as we all understand the bargain we’ve entered into (and companies act legally of course.)
